PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND AND OUR ENERGY CRISIS                                                       Karen Storey

March 24, 1989 resulted in the largest oil spill in history due to the Exxon Valdez.

President George Bush (Sr.) and oil companies introduced legislation that would allow drilling in the ANWR (Artic National Wildlife Refuge) This refuge encompasses 7.7 million hectares (19 million acres). Due to environmentalists and public outcry of the damage done to Alaska and the environment, this legislation was defeated.

2005, President George Bush (Jr.) along with Congress signed legislation to open up a small but significant part of the ANWR. The US government also opened up Alaskan territory for sale at $5.00/acre. Many foreign investors took advantage of this opportunity to "take and hold" the land. Their only requirement is they must develop the land and show profitability of $100/annually. (www.realtor.org & www.InmanNews.com).

March 2008, CNN released reports that the Salmon Industry in Alaska has declined significantly and the fishing industry is in a crisis. Many families that have built their life are now forced out of business. It is projected the cost of Salmon will rise significantly due to this shortage.

NOTE: Salmon is high in omega 3 and "good cholesterol/fats". Remember: "Likes dissolve likes"..what this means is oils will dissolve oils.

FYI - In the last 30 years there have been more than 17,000 oil spills in the Artic.

NOTE: 25% of chemicals from crude oil are volatile and will evaporate into the air. Within 3 months this becomes a major factor in air pollution.

In cold polar waters oil decomposes very slowly and becomes incorporated into sea ice.

1990 Congress Passed the "Oil Pollution Act" which establishes a $1 billion fund to be used to cleanup oil spills and pay for damages. This tax is passed on to the consumer. Prince William Sound has cost Exxon Mobile $2.5 Billion and the Federal Government $154 Million. According to www.CNN.com Exxon still owes more than $ 3 Billion in damages and is currently in negotiation with the Federal Government to lower this cost.

www.CNN.com and www.ABC.com released news April 2008 that the 5 major oil companies are under investigation due to greater profitability than ever before in the face of our current energy crisis.

Hypothesis: Sun shines down on sea ice. Sea ice with oil produces energy. Energy is released and sea ice melts. Hmmmm.. Artic is melting at an alarming rate. Artic Ocean has risen by several meters in the last 10 years (Inconvenient Truth Video). Hmmm. Global warming? Oil Spills? Energy Crisis?
